RIO DE ORO Onlus is a secular and independent non-profit organization from Italy that fights for the rights of the Sahrawi people that live in refugee camps near Tinduf (Algeria). Rio de Oro provides free medical care to the disabled population that lives in the camps, especially to the children.

Rio de Oro operates within the Sahrawi refugee camps, in the Algerian Sahara desert, with healthcare programs, building health facilities and other programs to improve the quality of life of the Sahrawi people facing disabilities.

The problem of disability is at the centre of Rio de Oro’s humanitarian action. We’ve been dealing for almost twenty years with more than one thousand Sahrawi people with disabilities, most of them children.

Each of them has been register and included in our child sponsorship program. Our staff visits periodically all of them to monitor their health situation and many of them have been operated, they are doing physiotherapy and they receive the medicines they need to survive.

We fight because they also have a right to a dignified existence and a future.
